High Liver Enzymes

What do high liver enzymes in your blood mean?

What do high liver enzymes in your blood meanIf you have been for some blood tests recently and the results show high liver enzymes in your blood this means there is a problem with your liver.

Do not panic because it might not be one of the serious diseases and if it is the one that I had then it can be cured.

The high level of enzymes could mean one of many things and the next step after this would be to have a scan on your liver, it was for me anyway.

If your liver is damaged then it will release a higher level than normal of its enzymes resulting in abnormal blood test results.

In most cases it will not be a serious problem and the levels can be returned back to normal, in my case by eating betting and doing some exercise.

What high liver enzymes meant for me

What high liver enzymes meant for meI had some blood test done after I had been to the doctors suffering from a dull ache pain just below my right hand side rib cage.

As you will have probably guessed the blood tests showed high liver enzymes in my blood, after this I was sent for a scan on the affected area.

The scan showed I had fatty deposits on my liver causing it to get bigger; this is why a high amount of enzymes were in my blood stream.

After the scan I was referred to my consultant who told me I had non alcoholic fatty liver disease, he told me to lose some weight and do some exercise.

So I went home and after that changed my diet and did a small amount of exercise every other night until I had got down to my ideal weight.

High liver enzymes and non alcoholic fatty liver disease

high liver enzymes and non alcoholic fatty liver diseaseFor me the high liver enzymes meant I had non alcoholic fatty liver disease of which is as you would expect is associated most of all with people that are overweight.

Most people do not even know that they have this problem with their liver because if you are in the first stages there are no symptoms at all.

I was in the second stage of the disease where I experienced the dull ache pain around my right rib cage area.

After the blood test had revealed that the enzymes in my blood were high I then had to have more blood taken to rule out hepititis.

After these results showed that I did not have hepititis I was then sent for a scan on my liver at the hospital, I hardly drink alcohol at all so I knew it had to be non alcoholic fatty liver disease that I had.

What i did when i had high liver enzymes

What i did when i had high liver enzymesI was surprised when I was diagnosed with non alcoholic fatty liver disease because I wasn't really overweight, I weighed 12 stone 7 and I am 5 foot 9 tall so I didn't look fat.

After the blood tests revealed I had high liver enzymes I was straight on the internet looking what it might be, and I have to say it worried me a little, well hepititis did anyway.

I knew right away there was a problem with my liver, so what could these high levels of enzymes mean?

When they told me I had non alcoholic fatty liver disease I was kind of relieved all I had to do was change my diet and do some exercise.

Of course this is what I did, I cut down on the amount of fat that I was eating and I did an exercise DVD every other night and in only a few months I was down to 10 stone 10 and the liver enzymes had returned to normal.

Other reasons you might have high liver enzymes

Other reasons you might have high liver enzymesThere are a whole load of other reasons that you might have high liver enzymes in your blood including drinking too much alcohol, as everyone knows can damage your liver.

Drugs used to control cholesterol levels and other medications can cause high levels of liver enzymes in your blood as can hepatitis a, b and c.

Heart failure is another cause as is liver cancer, pancreatitis polymyositis and muscular dystrophy as well as some others.

There is a good chance it is because you are overweight as it was for me and all you have to do is lose some weight and eat a bit better.

It is a lifestyle choice that I found easy to make, you either quit doing the things that are making you unwell or be prepared to have major problems with your liver later on in life.
